Rome & Vatican

Vatican

  • I am taking a Vatican Tour that includes Saint Peter’s Basilica, will we go up the dome?

It is possible to climb the Dome on your own if you wish, however you will need to purchase a ticket directly on site.  Our tours do not include a visit to the Dome. Please note that if you intend to climb the Dome after your tour ends, you should make sure to book a morning tour (not on a Wednesday) as the Dome access is already closed in the afternoon before our afternoon tours reach Saint Peter’s Basilica, and the Basilica is often closed on Wednesday mornings.

  • What is the difference between the morning and the afternoon 3 hours group tour?

While the itineraries for both tours are the same, our afternoon Vatican tours do not include a guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica. In the afternoon tour guides are not allowed to provide commentary within the Basilica. Instead, your guide will lead you to the Basilica, skipping the general access lines, and provide a full description and commentary from the entrance.

  • Do both the morning tours and the afternoon tour have the "no wait access" line?

Yes, you will skip the general public line. We have a special entrance agreement with the Vatican Museums which allows us to enter the Museums through our pre-booked ‘No-Wait Access’ entrance.

For many the two highlights of our tours are the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms. From the Sistine Chapel, groups exit the Museums and end the tour at St. Peter's Basilica in St. Peter's Square. In that event, the tour still lasts three hours and has a more extensive visit inside the world-famous Vatican Museums.

Throughout most of the Museums and in St. Peter's Basilica it is possible to take photographs. However, photography is strictly prohibited inside the Sistine Chapel.

  • How can I see the crypts in St. Peter's Basilica?

While the itineraries for both tours are the same, our afternoon Vatican tours do not include a guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica. Instead, your guide will lead you to the Basilica, skipping the general access lines, and provide a full description and commentary at the spectacular entrance.

The tours meet at a location which is very close and convenient to the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Full details of the exact location are included on the confirmation voucher you will receive upon booking your tour.

  • Am I allowed to take a backpack into the Museums?

Yes, guests can carry bags once they are smaller than 40cm length x 35cm width x 15cm depth. Anything bigger than this, or any umbrellas or camera tripods, must be checked into storage at the beginning of the tour.

The tour ends on the other side of the Vatican Museums, a significant walk away from the bag collection point. Guests who are forced to check bags must therefore leave the tour early to collect them or complete a 15 – 20-minute walk back to the entrance after their tour. Those doing the afternoon tour may not be able to retrieve their belongings until the following day.

Thus, we recommend that visitors travel light and leave any unnecessary belongings at home.

  • Do any of the City Wonders Vatican tours include the “Scavi”?

This option is only possible to book through the Vatican directly. The only way to get into the Scavi is to contact the Vatican directly through the Vatican Scavi office by emailing scavi@fsp.va to request access.

  • What is the difference between the Scavi and the Necropolis?

The Necropolis : this is what the crypts beneath St Peter’s Basilica are called, where most of the late Popes have been buried. If you wish to see this, you can book our Vatican Sistine Express with St Peter’s Basilica tour. This does not however, offer entry to the Scavi, which is where the tomb of St Peter is located.

The Scavi: this is where the tomb of St Peter is located. A visit to the Vatican Scavi then, is a pretty unique treat for Catholic visitors or anyone with archaeological curiosity. Access however, is limited and extremely tricky to come by. The only way to get in is to contact the Vatican directly through the Vatican Scavi office by emailing scavi@fsp.va to request access.

  • Is the Vatican Half Day Tour with Breakfast and Gardens suitable for my children?

Due to security reasons, the Vatican City State does not allow children under 6 years old on this tour. We use an open sided bus to tour the gardens and this could be unsafe for younger children.

  • What is the difference between the Vatican Half Day Tour with Breakfast and Gardens and the VIP Vatican Breakfast?

The VIP Vatican Breakfast tour does not include the 45 minute Vatican City and Gardens tour in a covered open-air bus.

  • What is the difference between the Group tour and the Family tour?

While the Group tour is a three hour tour, the Family tour is a two hour tour which has been specially designed for children from 7 to 12 years old. Children will have educational activities in reading and writing format and will discover lots about the Vatican, Sistine chapel and other areas in a fun way which will hold their attention.  You will still have the skip-the-line access for the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica and will follow the same itinerary as the group tour. Once you arrive in St. Peter’s Basilica, the guide will leave you and you will have the option to explore it by yourself.

  • We are taking a cruise ship to Civitavecchia and then transferring to Rome. We should be leaving the port by 7.30-8.00 AM. Will that allow us enough time to reach the meeting point for one of the Vatican group morning tours?

Transfers from Civitavecchia on average take 1 hour and 30 minutes, so that is cutting it very close. Depending on the day of the week and the amount of traffic you encounter, you may arrive with plenty of time to spare or you may arrive very late. Since we cannot refund late arrivals please consider carefully before booking a morning tour. We also offer afternoon group and private tours at 2.30 PM which may be a better option for you.

Many of these tickets are used by our Best of Milan Tour, but those that remain are sold as ‘Tickets only’, bookable no more than 3 days in advance of the date you wish to visit.

As this mural is so popular, only one group is permitted to enter at a time and they can stay for 15 minutes. Our tour group sizes are limited to 25 people or fewer, so there will never be more than this plus a guide inside the room while we visit, making it a wonderfully intimate experience that you will never forget.
