This private tour takes you far below the bustling Italian capital deep into Rome’s eerie and little-known macabre history. Walk past countless sunken eye-sockets as the skulls of ancient monks watch you from the bone-lined walls and revel in the tales of how these dark and sinister subterranean tunnels came to be. Not experienced on your typical tour, enjoy three hours of mystery and marvel with your expert local English-speaking guide.
Traverse a network of shadowy tunnels in the 2nd Century Roman Catacombs. Formerly a refuge for early Christians seeking a safe site to practice their forbidden faith and bury their deceased, this was the only safe sanctuary they had away from Nero’s violent regime.
We then cross over to the area where the famed Colosseum is located. Here rests the 14th Century Basilica San Clemente, a chapel which nearly drove the resident cleric mad with the sound of running water no one else seemed to hear. Your tour guide will entertain you with a tale like no other, culminating with a priest and a sledgehammer, a broken floor and an unbelievable discovery of layers of history churning beneath the surface. Here he found a 5th Century church, a 4th Century cult temple and a 1st Century Roman street and ancient aqueduct which answered the audible mystery that had wreaked water torture with his mind for so many months.
Three Layers of History Below
And for the most macabre of them all, we venture towards the Capuchin Crypt – or “Bone Chapel.” Here the Capuchins lined the walls and ceilings of their underground abode with the bones of 4,000 monks. Stand in awe (or awe-struck) beneath a vertebrae chandelier, shudder before a real skull and crossbones, and see the scary spectacle of robed skeletons still standing guard.
Forbidden or fascinating, you be the judge. This is your private tour, tailored to you and your eerie interests. See the side of Rome others walk above unbeknownst to them. A dark and sinister side that’s as frightening as it is captivating. You won’t be disappointed.
