Pompeii was a holiday resort for Romans, but tragedy struck in 79 A.D. when Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the area under layers upon layers of ash and pumice. Pompeii was frozen in time, with everything left as it was. Some people managed to escape, taking with them the things they could carry, but others were struck down and bodies were discovered hundreds of years later, looking like they were just walking to one of the shops, villas, brothels or public baths in the town. Now a much-visited archaeological site, the history of Pompeii is a fascinating one.

But that’s not all. Next, you’ll head towards Positano on the Amalfi Coast - this is one of the most scenic areas in Italy, and a real jewel in the crown of your Italian vacation. This pretty town is like something out of a postcard; colorful fishing houses, views of the bright blue sea, a mountain backdrop… it has everything you could want, and you’ll spend two hours of free time here to do as you please. Buy some souvenirs, treat yourself to a nice lunch or simply soak up the peace and quiet.
Your final stop will be a traditional Limoncello shop in Positano, where you’ll get to try this famous Italian delicacy. This is a zesty liqueur, something enjoyed right across the country - can you face the mixture of sweet and sour?! It’s a great way to end your Pompeii and Positano day trip from Rome, and you’ll head back to the city feeling totally fulfilled.
